The Wollaston polarizer is composed of two birefringent right angle prisms bonded together on an inclined surface. The optical axes of these two prisms are perpendicular to each other and perpendicular to the transmitted beam, which causes a sudden change in the direction of the crystal axis at the interface between the two prisms. When the beam passes through the prism, a symmetrical offset will be formed between the o-light and the e-light. The output beam will exhibit orthogonal linear polarization and have the same brightness and large angular offset. Both output beams are highly polarized and can be used simultaneously, with an extinction ratio greater than 100000:1 for each beam. They are widely used in polarization analyzers and spectrometers.
